Certified Renewable Energy

We're excited to currently be developing a certified renewable energy proposition and New Zealand’s first certified renewable energy mark.

If you haven’t seen it already, check out brewbetter.co.nz to find out more about the first example of this, developed in partnership with Garage Project brewery to launch TurbineTM pale ale, an ode to renewable energy and our Brooklyn Wind Turbine in Wellington.

What is certified renewable energy?

It is certification that is provided by the New Zealand Energy Certificate System (NZECS).  The certificates are issued to verify renewable energy generation equivalent to your consumption.

Yeah but how does it really work?

The best way to explain it is through a real life example, in this case TurbineTM pale ale and our partnership with Garage Project.

Like most homes and businesses in New Zealand, Garage Project’s brewery is connected to the national grid, which mingles electricity from our renewable generation with every other source of New Zealand’s generation, which means Garage Project get some renewable electricity and some non-renewable.

So while the energy Garage Project buys won’t necessarily come from the Brooklyn turbine – we can’t literally plug them in – NZECS certifies that the electricity they get from the national grid is matched on an annual basis with 100% renewable energy generated from the Brooklyn turbine.

NZECS issues certificates to us for each megawatt hour of renewable electricity generated from the turbine.  And these certificates are then allocated to Garage Project to cover the amount of electricity they actually use.

The certified renewable energy mark

To symbolise certified renewable energy we created a “mark”.

The mark allows businesses to show their support for 100% renewable energy generation and their decision to partner with us.
